WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama on Thursday signed into law a Julia Brownley-sponsored bill providing at least $2.5 million annually for dyslexia research.
The Research Excellence and Advancements for Dyslexia, or READ Act, was introduced by the Westlake Village Democrat and Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, together the co-chairs of the House Dyslexia Caucus.
Dyslexia is a learning disorder characterized by difficulty in reading. It is estimated that 8.5 million schoolchildren in the United States, or one out of six, may have dyslexia. Brownley has often spoken of her daughter Hannah’s struggle with dyslexia.
