Methodology – Dyslexia Instruction That Works
Dyslexia Instruction – Experts in the field largely agree that the most successful method for teaching reading to people with dyslexia was developed in the 1930’s by Samuel Orton, an American neuropsychiatrist and pathologist, and Anna Gillingham, an educator and school psychologist.
Specifics of the Orton Gillingham Approach
The Orton Gillingham Approach is effective because it is a multi-sensory, explicit, direct, and systematic approach to learning. Samuel Orton discovered that dyslexic individuals learn best when all their senses are engaged. To be effective, instruction must simultaneously contain auditory, visual, tactile, and kinesthetic elements. Successful learning occurs when each skill that is taught is repeatedly reinforced. The student practices by listening, speaking, reading, and writing until automaticity is achieved. Essentially, the student is learning by doing.
Currently, there are approximately ten Orton-Gillingham based programs that effectively teach reading to dyslexic individuals. One of those programs is the Barton Reading & Spelling System. It is the program I use with my students.
The Barton Reading & Spelling System
The Barton Reading & Spelling System is a one-on-one tutoring system that uses a multi-sensory explicit, direct, and systematic approach to teach reading, spelling, and writing. It is nationally recognized as one of the most effective multi-sensory structured literacy approaches to reading instruction available today, and has been formally approved by the California State Board of Education.
The Barton Reading & Spelling System incorporates the findings of scientific reading research by first teaching phonemic awareness skills (the foundation for phonics) and then introducing phonics. Once students have solid phonemic awareness and phonics skills, multi-sensory explicit, direct, and systematic instruction will continue for the duration of the program. Students learn the skills and are provided the tools that eventually result in learning how to read and spell any word, even if they have never seen it before.
